High Efficiency Heating and Cooling Solutions

REA Energy Services now offers exciting new ways to heat and cool your home with modern high-efficiency electric heat pumps. Technical improvements to modern high-efficiency heat pumps allows them to easily meet the demanding heating requirements of Central Pennsylvania’s mountainous regions, and at just a fraction of the cost of heating with conventional systems.

Electric heat pumps come in two varieties, air-source and geothermal. Air-source heat pumps take the free heat from the outside air and pump it into your home. Geothermal heat pumps take the free heat from the earth and pump it into your home.

The most efficient air-source heat pumps deliver a seasonal average of approximately three units of energy as heat into your home for each unit of electrical energy used. The air-source heat pump does this by extracting heat from the outside air and pumping it into your home. The electricity is used to do the pumping instead of being “burned” to produce the heat. This makes heating your home with an electric heat pump much less expensive than with a fossil fuel furnace. To air condition your home, the heat pump pumps heat in the reverse direction. Installing an air-source heat pump is about the same cost as installing a top quality fossil fuel furnace and central air conditioning.

The most efficient geothermal heat pumps deliver a seasonal average of approximately five units of energy as heat into your home for each unit of electrical energy used. The geothermal heat pump operates similarly to an air-source heat pump, but instead of extracting heat from the outside air, it extracts heat from the earth under your yard and pumps it into your home. Using the constant temperature of the earth under your yard for a heat source makes a geothermal heat pump the most efficient heating system available. The work required to couple the geothermal heat pump to the earth also makes it more expensive to install than an air-source unit.

Geothermal heat pumps also have the ability to heat the water in your hot water tank with the same high efficiency they use to heat your home, significantly reducing your cost for hot water. For some families with energy efficient homes, the geothermal heat pump saves as much energy by making hot water as it uses to heat their home. This, in effect, allows them to heat their homes for free.

Some good reasons to choose an electric heat pump for your home:

  • Reduces your heating bill.

  • Pays for itself in energy savings by using free heat from the earth or air.

  • Increases the resale value of your home.

  • Does not overheat and dry out your home’s air like heating with a flame does.

  • Only requires easy maintenance that a home owner can do.

  • Designed to last for many years.

  • Some systems can be integrated into your existing furnace to reduce installation costs.
